Once cured, that layer takes the abuse the paint used to take: sun works on the coating instead of oxidizing the clear coat, bird droppings, tree sap and bug splatter sit on top instead of etching in, brake dust and road film cannot bond, and water beads and sheets off instead of drying into spots and grime. Because it goes on over freshly corrected paint, the finish also looks deeper and glossier, and the coating locks that clarity in. For most people who keep a car more than a year and park it outside at least some of the time, yes. The value is not one big moment, it is hundreds of small ones: rinsing off a week of dust in five minutes, sap that wipes away instead of etching, paint that is still deep and unfaded when you sell or trade the car. It is worth the most on new or freshly corrected paint, dark colours, cars that live outdoors, and anyone who dislikes washing. It is worth the least on paint whose clear coat is already failing, which no coating can fix.

A professional coating is measured in years, not months. How many depends on the grade of coating, how well the paint was prepared, whether the car is garaged, and above all how it is washed. Hand or touchless washing with a pH-neutral soap keeps it working; brush car washes, harsh chemicals and contamination left to bake all shorten it. No. A coating is a few microns thick. It resists the fine swirls that washing puts into paint and it shrugs off chemical damage, but it cannot absorb a rock at freeway speed, a key or a shopping cart. That is what paint protection film (PPF) is for: a thick, clear urethane film that takes the impact. Many owners do both, film on the hood, bumper and mirrors where chips happen, and a coating over the whole car for gloss, chemical resistance and easy cleaning. For a daily driver that is not always behind trucks on the freeway, a coating alone is usually the right call.

Yes. A coating locks in whatever is under it, so swirls, water spots and haze sealed beneath a coating stay there for its entire life. Correction removes them first, and a corrected, fully decontaminated surface is also what lets the coating bond properly to the clear coat. It is included in both of our packages: one-step polishing for newer or well-kept paint, two-step compounding and polishing for heavily swirled, oxidized or dark paint.

It is the best time. New paint has the fewest defects to correct, and coating it before its first automatic wash means it never picks up the swirls most cars carry within a year. It still needs decontamination and a light polish, because transport, the dealer lot and the pre-delivery wash leave more behind than you would think. A professionally applied coating does not affect the manufacturer's paint warranty. If a dealership offers you a protection package, ask what product is applied and whether any correction is done before you pay for it. Teslas, Rivians and other cars with thin, soft paint benefit the most.

Gently and regularly. Two-bucket hand wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a clean microfiber mitt, every two to three weeks if the car lives outside, then dry it with plush microfiber towels or a blower rather than letting it air-dry. Touchless car washes are fine. Avoid brush and cloth tunnel washes, degreasers, and anything acidic or strongly alkaline on the paint. Do not put wax or a paint sealant over a coating; they cannot bond to it and only mask how it behaves. A maintenance detail once or twice a year keeps it performing.

Touchless, yes. Brush or cloth tunnels, no: the spinning brushes carry grit from every car before yours, and they are the fastest way to put swirls into a coating. If a touchless wash is your routine, dry the car afterwards, because the recycled water those systems use leaves mineral spots.

A complete coating with one-step correction is a full-day appointment. Two-step correction can run longer or split over two visits. You can drive the car the same evening. Keep it dry and out of direct rain, sprinklers and bird droppings for the first 24 hours while the coating hardens, and do not wash it at all for the first week; no soap, chemicals or waxes for two weeks. If it gets rained on early, dry it, do not scrub it. You get written cure and care instructions for the exact coating we used.

It makes them less likely and easier to remove, not impossible. Water spots are minerals left behind when tap or sprinkler water dries on the paint. A coating keeps them from bonding into the clear coat, but they can still etch the coating itself if left in the sun for weeks. Dry the car after washing, keep it away from lawn sprinklers, and wipe fresh spots with a quick detailer as soon as you see them. Caught early they come off; ignored, they need polishing.

Abrasion and chemistry, in that order. Brush car washes, dirty wash mitts and dry wiping put fine scratches into it. Strong wheel cleaners, degreasers, tar removers and alkaline truck-wash soaps eat into it. Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap left to bake in the sun will etch through eventually. Neglect is the quiet one: a coating that is never washed gets buried in road film and stops beading, which people mistake for the coating failing. Regular gentle washing prevents all of it.

Water behaviour is the tell. A working coating beads tightly and sheets off when you rinse. When beading goes flat and the paint stays dusty after a wash, it is almost always road film sitting on top of the coating, not the coating wearing out, and a decontamination wash brings it back. When the paint stops beading even after a proper decontamination, the coating has reached the end of its life and it is time to correct and re-coat.

Yes, with coatings made for each surface. Wheel coatings shrug off brake dust so wheels rinse clean instead of needing harsh cleaners. Glass coatings sheet rain off the windshield at speed and make bugs and ice easier to clear. Trim coatings keep black plastic dark. Wraps, paint protection film and matte paint can be coated with matte-safe products that protect without adding gloss. We quote these as add-ons to the paint.

Spray ceramics and ceramic-infused waxes are toppers: a thin layer applied in an afternoon that lasts a few months, with no prep. A professional coating is a far denser product applied panel by panel over corrected, decontaminated paint, then cured, and it protects for years. Sprays are a good way to maintain a professional coating between details. They are not a substitute for one.

Three things: the size of the vehicle, because more panels mean more prep and more product; the condition of the paint, which sets whether one-step or two-step correction is needed; and how much you want coated beyond the paint, such as wheels, glass and trim. We quote every vehicle individually from its year, make, model and a photo of the paint in sunlight. A quote far below the going rate usually means the correction is being skipped, and correction is most of the work.
