Piedmont sits inside Oakland, which makes it one of the shortest drives we make — often under ten minutes from base. It is also the city where we do the highest proportion of paint correction and ceramic coating work, because the cars here tend to be newer, frequently garaged, and worth protecting properly.
The local enemy is the tree canopy. Piedmont is heavily wooded with mature oaks, pines and liquidambars, and that canopy drops three things onto parked cars year-round: sap, pollen and bird droppings. All three are acidic. Sap bonds hard and pulls clear coat with it if you scrape at it; bird droppings etch a visible ring into the surface within days in warm weather; pollen packs into cowl vents, window channels and the base of the windscreen.
None of that is a wash problem either. Sap needs a solvent and a clay bar, etching needs machine polishing to level the clear coat, and pollen needs compressed air and a proper interior extraction. A tunnel wash on a sap-covered car mostly just drags the sap across the paint and adds swirl marks on top.

Swirl marks are fine scratches in the clear coat, and they show worst on exactly the colours that are common here — black, dark grey, deep blue and metallic silver on well-kept cars. They come from washing, not from driving: automatic brush washes, dirty wash mitts, and drying with a towel that picked up grit last time.
Machine polishing is the only real fix, because you are levelling the clear coat rather than filling the scratches. A one-step correction ($250–$500 typical) removes the large majority of light swirling; a two-step ($500–$800+) goes after deeper defects on neglected or heavily swirled paint. We assess in daylight with a swirl-finder light and tell you honestly which one your paint actually needs — often it is the one-step.
If your car is newer, garaged and parked under trees, a coating is the single best-value thing you can do to it. $800–$1,550 complete — sedan $800–$1,000, mid-size SUV $1,000–$1,250, large SUV or truck $1,250–$1,550 — including hand wash, clay and iron decontamination, paint correction, the coating itself, cure and inspection.
On a coated car, sap and droppings sit on top of the coating rather than bonding to the paint, so they come off with a rinse and a gentle wipe instead of a solvent and a polish. It runs about three years. We need a garage or covered space for the day so the coating cures properly — which most Piedmont homes have.
Multi-car households are common here, and we are happy to do two or three vehicles in a single visit; tell us when you request a quote and we will price the whole set and block the time.
Most Piedmont properties have a driveway or garage apron, which is all we need — we are fully self-contained with our own water and power, so nothing gets run off your taps or outlets. On the narrower hill streets we will confirm a workable spot when you book.

Yes. Sap needs a dedicated solvent and a clay bar, not scraping — scraping is what takes clear coat with it. If the sap has been baking on for months it may have etched the surface underneath, in which case a light machine polish restores the gloss. We will tell you which you are dealing with before we start.
Usually. Droppings are acidic and etch a ring into the clear coat, and if caught within a few weeks a one-step machine polish levels it out completely. Left through a hot summer it can reach the paint layer, and then it may only improve rather than disappear. Sooner is much better.
One-step removes most light and moderate swirling and suits newer or well-kept cars, which is most of what we see in Piedmont. Two-step is for deep swirls, oxidation or neglected dark paint. We assess yours under a swirl-finder light and recommend the lesser option whenever it will do the job.
