Richmond is a short run up the 580 and the 80 from our Oakland base, and it is the one city we cover that is heavily industrial and genuinely coastal at the same time. The refinery, the Port, the rail yards and the truck traffic along Richmond Parkway sit on one side of town. Miles of shoreline sit on the other. Both leave deposits on your paint that washing does not remove, and together they are why Richmond cars need real decontamination more often than cars a few miles inland.
The industrial side puts iron in the air: microscopic metal particles that settle on horizontal panels, embed in the clear coat and then oxidize in place. You see them as tiny rust-colored specks, most obvious on white and silver paint, and you feel them as a gritty, sandpaper texture on a panel that looks clean. Soap does not lift them, because by then they are in the paint rather than on it. Removing them takes a chemical iron remover followed by a clay bar, which is exactly what our Clay & Seal exterior is built around.
The shoreline side adds salt. Marina Bay, Point Richmond, Brickyard Cove and the marina all sit in moving salt air, and salt accelerates corrosion wherever it settles and stays: lower panels, wheel arches, brake components and unprotected trim. Rinsing helps for a week. A sealant or a ceramic coating is what stops salt from sitting on bare clear coat for months at a time.

The usual pattern we see in Richmond is a car that has been washed regularly and still feels rough to the touch. That is fallout. Washing a contaminated panel does not remove the particles, it drags them across the clear coat, which is how a well-cared-for car ends up with fine swirl marks and a dull, hazy finish anyway. More washing makes it worse, not better.
The fix is sequential. A chemical iron remover dissolves the embedded metal first, and you can watch it bleed purple as it works. Clay then shears off whatever is left sitting proud of the surface. Only after that is the paint clean enough to polish or protect. If fallout has been left long enough to etch, paint correction is what removes the marks underneath, and we will tell you honestly which of the two you are looking at before quoting.
Cars parked within a few blocks of the water take salt continuously, not seasonally. It is worst on the surfaces nobody looks at: sills, the bottoms of doors, wheel arches and the hardware around brakes and suspension. Paint that is sealed handles it. Bare clear coat, faded trim and unprotected wheels do not.
Coatings earn their keep in exactly these conditions. Ours protect for years with hand-wash maintenance, and the price covers full prep, decontamination and correction, not just the coating itself, because how much correction your paint needs is the real variable. We do need a garage or covered space for the day so it cures properly, which is straightforward at most Marina Bay and Richmond Annex properties.
Bigger vehicles are common on this side of town. We wash and detail motorhomes, trailers and boats at the property or at the storage yard with our own water and power, so a boat kept near the marina does not need to go anywhere. Our van is fully self-contained, with its own water and power, which matters more in Richmond than in most places we work. Condo garages at Marina Bay, apartment lots, and street parking in Point Richmond are all fine. All we need is a space with enough room to open the doors and move around the vehicle.
