San Leandro is a straight run down I-880 from our Oakland base, and it is one of the easiest cities in the East Bay for us to work in — most homes here actually have a driveway. In Washington Manor, Broadmoor, Floresta Gardens and Estudillo Estates we can pull up, set out the mats and work without the parking gymnastics that Berkeley and Alameda demand.
It is also a city that puts two very different kinds of grime on a car. Along the shoreline — the Marina, Monarch Bay, Mulford Point — you get the same salt-laden marine air that eats clear coat in Alameda. Two miles inland along the 880 corridor you get the opposite problem: brake dust, tire particulate and industrial fallout that embeds in the paint and shows up as rough, rust-coloured specks when you run a hand over the panels.
Both are decontamination problems, not wash problems. A clay bar and iron remover lift the bonded contamination that a tunnel wash slides straight past, and a sealant or ceramic coating stops it re-bonding. If you commute on the Nimitz — and in San Leandro, most people do — your car is collecting iron. Brake dust is hot metal particulate that lands on the clear coat and bonds to it. You cannot see it at first, but you can feel it: run your fingertips over the hood after a wash and if it feels like fine sandpaper rather than glass, that is embedded iron.
Left alone it oxidises and leaves permanent orange pitting, worst on white and silver cars where it shows first. An iron remover turns it visibly purple as it dissolves, then the clay bar takes the rest. We do this on every Clay & Seal and before every paint correction — coating rough paint just seals the problem underneath.
Cars parked west of Doolittle or near the Marina, Monarch Bay and the shoreline trail live in salt fog. It settles overnight on every horizontal panel and it does not rinse off with plain water. If your car lives outdoors down there, plan on a decontamination exterior every three months rather than the six you could stretch to inland.
A ceramic coating changes that maths considerably. At $800–$1,550 complete — sedan $800–$1,000, mid-size SUV $1,000–$1,250, large SUV or truck $1,250–$1,550, including decontamination and paint correction — the surface becomes hydrophobic enough that salt and fog rinse away instead of sitting and etching. We need a garage or shaded spot for the day, which most San Leandro homes have.

No. We are fully self-contained — we bring our own water tank and power. All we need is legal, reasonably level space to work around the vehicle, which most San Leandro driveways have easily.
That is embedded iron, almost certainly brake dust from I-880. It bonds to the clear coat and oxidises. An iron remover dissolves it — it turns purple as it works — and a clay bar lifts whatever is left. It is included in our Clay & Seal exterior and before any paint correction.
Every three months for a decontamination exterior if it lives outdoors near the shoreline — salt fog bonds faster there. Two to three miles inland you can usually stretch to every four to six months. A ceramic coating reduces that to maintenance washes plus a yearly decon.
